In 1985 I formed a rap group (The Road Runners) with my friend Ronald McMillen and in 1986 we went into the studio with my big brother Chaz Wesley, (who was the lead singer and one of the lead producers and writers of my families singing group, THE FAMILY CIRCLE in the 70's) and put together a demo song called THEY WANT TO BE LIKE US. I wish I had that song today but I think it's been lost over time. I still hope somebody calls me and says they have it. About ½ a year later the hip hop classic album, CRIMINAL MINDED by BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS dropped.... and man did it hit the streets hard. It wasn't crazy to stand at a 4-way intersection and 3 of the cars were blasting a song off the album. I guess the man driving the fourth car was a minister or something, so he had his volume down low. After rockin that joint for a while, we looked on the back of the cassette and there was the address for B-BOY RECORDS. We looked at each other and was like way not? So we hopped in my 1977 Chrysler New Yorker and drove over to the record company in the Bronx. We talked our way in and was told someone would listen to our song after the meeting, which was in progress. In the meantime one of the artist JERRY LEVI took us to a spot downstairs were we talked for a while, before we played our song. He was real cool, but he didn't like our song – he said it was too pop. So we talked for a while more and then started to leave. We were almost in the car when a guy asked us where we going from a window upstairs. Minutes later, we were inside and he started playing our song. I got a chill when he stopped the tape early into the first verse. He made eye contact with another person in the room. Then he played it again for another few seconds... stopped it again. He called someone in from the next room and played it again some more. They talked as it was playing so I questioned how much listening they were doing. I guess it was enough because a while later they gave us recording contracts off the strength of our one song and said we were going to be their RUN DMC. Mind blowing stuff. We brought the contracts back home and were in disbelief that we were going to be on the same label with BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS and KRS-1. Well, if you know the story about the beef between KRS and B-Boy records, then you know why we didn't sign. If you don't... look it up. (CONT)
A while later we signed with Big House Records in Irvington, NJ and that's where I met GEE ROCK. I was amazed by his production skill and creativity. Dude made great music while using very little high end equipment. He was the reason we wanted to be there. For a lot of crazy reasons, Big House crumbled, Ron left the group and I went solo. After that I went into many big name studios, including THE HOUSE OF MUSIC, KOOL AND THE GANG'S studio and did some demos that I and the people around me were sure to land me a deal... but it never happened. While I was doing that, GEE was putting his projects together by himself and putting them out there himself. I was fortunate enough to be on several of those projects, which keep me out there. I took a break from trying to put any complete hip hop projects together and turned to screenwriting (Got 5 as of now). Also during that time, I became an E-Mortal by putting out a ton of e-books, published a long running martial arts E-magazine and also a Bollywood E-Magazine with my wife on my website.
A while later I started to vibe with SPLITPERSONALITY at our job and I really like the work he put together when I peeped his CD, BLESSED BY GOD, CURSED BY MAN. I still rock that joint to this day. I told him that I was about to do a cypher joint on another of GEE ROCK's projects (TRUTH BE TOLD, 2010), where the chances were good that he was going to get PERCEE P and another legendary emcee on that joint. Well, that's all I needed to hear. That sent me into step your game the hell up mode and I dropped one of my most popular sets, called the 8 BARS OF DEATH. No disrespect to the other artist who appeared, but when I hear two legends that inspire what I do was going to be on there... Well my plan is to shine next to them, not behind them. For rappers today, that's how we did it back then in the golden era. Love and respect breeds competition. For one reason or another the other legendary emcee didn't do it but he sure helped fuel my fire. (CONT)

After that SPLIT pulled me over to his home recording studio and we put together a EP called LYRICAL JKD. I still get a lot of love from that project. Next up was The WORDSMIF. Again some great stuff off this project, but since it had been years and years since I had done anything on the production end some songs fell short. I had to do this project solo, which is when I found out that my ear for mixing and mastering was sometimes bad. I got a handful of songs that I'm really proud of and a couple were even given the CLASSIC title by reviewers. GEE told me my song THE LAST RHYMEBENDER is one of his favorite hip hop songs ever. You can't buy that kind of praise from people you respect, and people who know what they're talking about. Overall the WORDSMIF was good, but not where I wanted it to be. But the benefit of doing everything yourself is, you can go back and do it again. AND I WILL. My final project will be THE MIC WARZ unless somebody throws a ton of money my way to do another one. I will still put out singles and appear on cypher joints but no full projects anymore.

In recent years I have appeared on several mixtapes produced by the LEGENDARY MIXTAPE KING RON-G, and have received a lot of love and great feedback from him. When the legends tell you, that you got it... it means the world.
After starting in 85 or 86 and now it's 2016, that's 30 years in hip hop so I guess I'm worthy of this award. I do this now for the same reason I started... the love. You won't find me all over the net in videos... haven't shot any for my projects but I will someday. I don't really promote because real hip hop heads will find it and that's where my work speaks for itself. And that's who it's for. - Java da Ancient
